Postpartum Depression Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All: How Symptoms Vary
Postpartum depression (PPD) is often talked about as a single experience, but in reality, it can look very different from one person to another. While sadness is a common symptom, postpartum depression includes a wide range of emotional, mental, and physical experiences that are not always recognized.
At Live Full Therapy in Nashville, we understand that the postpartum experience is different for everyone and has a profound impact on emotions, the body, and the nervous system. Our therapists are here to walk with you through this chapter and provide the compassion, tools, and therapeutic alliance you need.
Understanding Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that can occur during pregnancy or after childbirth. Unlike the “baby blues,” which are temporary, PPD involves ongoing symptoms that can interfere with daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. Other PP symptoms may include those experienced in anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
Common and Overlooked Symptoms
Some people with postpartum depression experience sadness, tearfulness, or hopelessness. Others may feel emotionally numb, irritable, or disconnected from their baby. Anxiety is also a common but less discussed symptom and may include constant worry, racing thoughts, or fear of making mistakes.
Additional symptoms can include:
Difficulty bonding with baby
Loss of interest in activities
Trouble concentrating or making decisions
Changes in sleep or appetite beyond typical newborn patterns
Why Symptoms Vary
Postpartum depression is influenced by many factors, including hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, birth experiences, mental health history, and support systems. Because these factors differ for each person, symptoms can vary widely in intensity and presentation. People in the PP phase may be confused as to why their experience seems different from others they know or from what they have heard, an unfortunate effect of the minimal conversations we have about the PP experience, and false images portrayed in media.
